A YOUNG boy, playing with a group of British and Spanish children, had to be pulled out of a manhole on the street last Monday after a dangerous game they were playing went horribly wrong.
The youngsters had accessed the underground watering system on the Costa del Sol beach of Sabinillas, in Manilva, via an uncovered hole in the wall there.
The underground system runs underneath the town and carries waste water to the sea, with manholes or grids on the streets above.
Local sources say the kids lit some mattresses at the beach exit, causing a rapid blaze. But while most children escaped to the beach, one Spanish child was unable to climb out in time.
The flames and smoke forced him back into the waterway, where he became trapped underneath the La Colonia area of Sabinillas. Passers-by heard him screaming and called for back-up.
Locals had to reach down into a drain to rescue the boy because smoke was bellowing from the manhole.  He emerged, covered in black smoke, and had to be treated by an ambulance crew.
“It was horrible,” said one witness. “There was smoke everywhere and it was chaotic. We did not know if more children were down there, because they could have easily have died.”
Firemen eventually put out the blaze.
