LOCAL Police officers from Santa Cruz, on foot patrol around the Anaga coastline, in Las Palmas de Anaga, noticed a package washed up on the beach, which, when opened, was found to contain 1.5kg of cocaine.
It appeared to have come from America, and the officers are certain that this is not the first time a package will be found on Canarian shores. The archipelago is a preferred route for drug-traffickers, known as the stepping stone into Europe.
Over the years, it has become common knowledge that the 1,500km of coastline surrounding the Canary Islands is most attractive for many illegal activities, partly because the archipelago’s location offers an easy access into Europe for many traffickers.
The islands are familiar with people trafficking, as well as the illegal entry of hashish because of their proximity to the neighbouring continent,
The drugs pass through the islands in three popular ways: the first by small sailing yacht, which makes small stops on route to avoid detection, and the second is by drug mules, which bring the drugs in via the airport or ports, after swallowing many bullet-shaped packages containing the substances.
Then, thirdly, there are the bales of drugs, which are transferred from a bigger ship to a smaller boat, to bring the drugs closer to the coastline.
It is likely that the package discovered last week was bought in this way.
