A PENSIONER had the luckiest escape of his life, as did other drivers, when, totally disoriented, the 81-year-old drove his car against the traffic for 13 miles, on the TF-1, heading southbound.
True, the 81-year-old man caused some disruption to the oncoming traffic, but he was rescued when officers in a Guardia Civil patrol car stopped his progress. Miraculously, there no accidents.
He began his journey at Añaza, and was intercepted by the Guardia in Guimar, alongside the industrial estate.
An emergency call had been made at 8.30am, informing the operator of the circumstances.
Before long, Guardia Civil Trafico officers detected the vehicle, and stopped the oncoming traffic for safety reasons.
They then caught up with the errant driver, halting him by turning on the sirens as well as the headlights.
As they approached the vehicle in their car, the driver looked disorientated, yet he managed to stop his vehicle.
The elderly man was also extremely nervous, and he told the police he hadn’t realised he was driving all that distance in the wrong lane.
