TWO unnamed British citizens, arrested during anti-drug-trafficking raids in Marbella, on the Costa del Sol, were picked up in San Pedro de Alcantara, during a search of three properties, there and in Mijas.
The raids, involving large sums of cash seized, as well as documents, were part of a probe into an international criminal gang
They had been suspected of transporting large volumes of hashish from Morocco to the UK, via the Costa del Sol and Strait of Gibraltar, via their fruit-export companies.
The investigation began at the end of October last year, when Guardia Civil officers became aware of British gangs sending large volumes of the drug back to the UK.
Further investigations discovered that bales of hashish were being hidden in homes and properties, featuring high-security measures, to avoid police detection.
When the traffickers believed the coast was clear, they moved the drugs to the small town of Trujillanos, in Palencia.
There, the drug-traffickers used their fruit-export companies as a front to move the drugs across Spain and into northern Europe.
Guardia officers intercepted at least one truck when it reached Salamanca, seizing 1,335kg of hashish, hidden among boxes of oranges.
They called in the UK’s National Crime Agency, as well as French Judicial Police, in a bid to identify and track down suspects involved in the gang.
The crack team ordered the three raids, featuring homes in San Pedro de Alcantara and Mijas, leading to the Brits’ arrest. A Frenchman was also nabbed when he later returned from his native country.
