AN archaeological dig under Alicante’s central market in Elche has uncovered a grim scene:120 skeletons, dating back to the Islamic period of the city’s history.
The human remains go back to between the 11th and 13th centuries, and, in a poignant insight into the realities of life and death in those times, 60% are of children under 12 years of age.
The discovery was made during the third phase of an archaeological investigation of the area.
Elche’s Urbanism Councillor, José Manuel Sánchez, said a fourth phase of excavations was planned to take in the ruins of the Arab baths, extending into the Central Market building.
The gruesome find follows the discovery of three skeletons during February’s exhumation work at Mallorca’s
Pou de s’Aguila, in Llucmajor.
It is thought that the skeletons might have belonged to victims of the Franco regime, and families with missing relatives were invited to contact Mallorca Council to arrange DNA tests.
