Low-cost airline Ryanair will start direct flights between Lappeenranta and Athens next summer. The Irish no-frills carrier is particularly interested in testing demand for the route among Russian tourists as Lappeenranta is the closest EU airport to St. Petersburg, which is less than 200 km away.

"Athens offers good connections to other Mediterranean destinations," notes Eija Joro, chief executive at Lappeenranta Airport.

Ryanair previously flew from Lappeenranta to Italy, but the flights were discontinued in 2015 after the value of the rouble collapsed and the number of Russian tourists plummeted.

The new flights from Athens are expected to bring Greek football fans to the FIFA World Cup, which will be held in St. Petersburg and other Russian cities next June and July.

In addition to Athens, flights to several Central European destinations are likely to start from Lappeenranta next summer. "We are negotiating with a number of airlines," says Joro.

Ryanair will also continue to fly from Tampere to Budapest, Hungary, and Bremen, Germany, during the summer season.

Cheap Flights to St.Petersburg, Russia

St. Petersburg is the place miracles are made. Today, Russia’s second largest city is known for its stunning tsarist architecture, fashionable restaurants, shopping and electric nightlife, all set along the beautiful Neva River. But St. Petersburg is also the site of some of the most pivotal moments in Russia's history, most notably the Siege of Leningrad.

One of the most awesome spectacles you can see once you've stepped off a flight to St. Petersburg are the “white nights” that occur in the city in the summer. Find cheap flights to St. Petersburg in June and July and watch in awe as the city glows from the prolonged twilight. The sun never drops far enough below the horizon to create the usual nighttime darkness, so the city is constantly lit up under the miraculous white light.
